Mozambique Tropical Chill – 12 Days (B 12) from R12550

A tour to Mozambique’s coast available as Camping or accommodated tours.

We depart early from Johannesburg and continue on to Mozambique. The coast faces the Indian Ocean and because of its climate, warm waters and vast beach area is rich in many marine species, some of which are unfortunately in danger of extinction.
Parallel to the coast, are isolated or groups of islands, some of which provide the tourist with good conditions in terms of lodging and the opportunity to observe the very varied vegetation and fascinating wildlife. Historic monuments are also to be found on these islands, a testimony to the Arabs and Europeans who settled there.
The magnificent transparent waters are an irresistible invitation to go swimming, snorkeling and diving and admire the extraordinarily beautiful coral reef and the underwater marine life.

Day 1: South Africa-Mozambique (Bilene)

Our tour starts off with a drive from the top of the plateau down to Nelspruit. From here we go past the southern point of Kruger National Park to the border of Mozambique. Once across the border we will make our way to the tropical beaches of Bilene. Our evening ends with a typical Portuguese dinner.

Day 2: Bilene

After an early morning swim in the clear waters of the inland lake that stretches for 27 km, breakfast is served, after which you can relax on the beach at our campsite. The rest of the day you can familiarize yourself with the local fisherman and maybe even go prawning with them. This is an excellent time to immerse yourself in their culture and get to know how the locals live. There is a local market where you can find an assortment of curios, and a walk through the town is a must. Your local guide will be on hand to take you across the lake and then for a walk along the beach to the look out where at most times of the year you can see the turtles that dwell in the tropical waters of Bilene

Day 3: Morrungulo

Leaving the inland lakes of Bilene behind us, we make our way further north through the towns of Xai Xai and Maxixe (where inland lakes add to the beauty of the area) and on through the coconut plantations to the tropical beaches of Morrungulo. Our campsite is an old army base. A late afternoon swim in the warm Indian Ocean is a must.

Days 4, 5: Bazaruto Archipelago

The road continues north from here, where the coconut trees take up most of the space in this once forgotten country. We make our way up to the Bazaruto Archipelago, where the islands give you a feeling once only experienced by the explorers of the past. The days here are spent in the fresh air on the beaches of Vilankulo. A Dhow trip out to one of the islands will be organized for a day. Snorkeling at one of the reefs in the area is a must, with its many species of fish, and, at times, the Green and Leather-Back Turtles and Manta Rays. Fresh seafood and catch of the day are one of the attractions of this area. Dugongs (Manatees) and Flamingoes are also seen at certain times of the year in the waters of the archipelago.

Days 6, 7, 8: Barra

After a visit to the market, we will head towards Barra Beach. The warm tropical waters of Barra attract many species of fish and other sea dwelling creatures such as Green and Leather-Back Turtles, Manta Rays and the Whale Shark, the majestic giant of the sea. If you are a diver there will be time for you to do a dive or two in the next couple of days.

The small town of Tofo also has its own small curio and food market and one or two restaurants where they serve great seafood and other local dishes typical of Mozambique. Your guide will organize your Ocean Safari, which is included in the tour. If you would like to learn how to surf, you will have the opportunity to take some classes.
